Vt. man accused of crushing cruisers charged again

NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) ? A Vermont man charged with driving a tractor over seven police vehicles and crushing them is facing another charge.

The Orleans County court says Roger Pion (PEE'-on) was arraigned Tuesday on a charge of driving with a suspended license.

Pion already faced 14 criminal counts after police say he drove his dad's tractor over six cruisers and a van at the county sheriff's department in Derby on Aug. 2.

Police say he then drove the tractor toward downtown Newport before they stopped him. They say he had been angry over a previous arrest for marijuana possession.

Pion has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He received financial support from people worldwide after his arrest. He thanked them when he left a correctional facility last month and said he had no regrets.

His lawyer says the latest charge "seems gratuitous."

Smith throws 2 TDs, San Francisco defense handles potent Detroit offense in 27-19 win

SAN FRANCISCO - Two weeks in, the San Francisco 49ers are playing like one of the NFL's best ? and you can shake on that.

San Francisco stymied 2011 NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers in Week 1, then record-setting Matthew Stafford in Week 2.

These Niners are doing it on offense, too.

Vernon Davis caught touchdown passes of 21 and 23 yards from Alex Smith, and San Francisco beat the Detroit Lions 27-19 on Sunday night in a September showdown of NFC powers that hardly lived up to its hype.

"Two playoff teams, back to back, and we came back out here tonight and did it again," running back Frank Gore said. "We came out here and started the game fast, and then we finished it."

This stingy, opportunistic defense denied Stafford another milestone and again is making its mark as one of the league's elite facing the top offenses and most prolific passers.

Smith completed 20 of 31 throws for 226 yards and extended his franchise-record streak of passes without an interception to 216. He led the reigning NFC West champion Niners (2-0) to their ninth straight win in the series since the Lions' last victory on Sept. 25, 1995. Smith took a hard hand to the helmet from John Wendling late and bloodied his nose, then found Davis again.

"He's as tough as a $2 steak," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "I grew up eating a lot of them. I know what I'm talking about."

The 49ers ran their home winning streak against the Lions to 12 games since Detroit's last victory at Candlestick Park on Nov. 2, 1975.

And no heated greeting after this one. Harbaugh and Lions coach Jim Schwartz met each other with a friendly hello and handshake during pregame warmups, then an uneventful shake and half-hug when time expired.

"I thought it went good," Harbaugh said.

Gore carried 17 times for 89 yards and a 1-yard touchdown, just missing his second 100-yard game this year and fourth in the series.

Calvin Johnson caught eight passes for 94 yards, but that was hardly enough as the Lions (1-1) didn't get closer than the 20 until their final drive on a cool, windy night by the bay. San Francisco's secondary kept Megatron from catching a touchdown pass for the second straight matchup, forcing Stafford to rely heavily on the running game.

Another impressive outing by a defense that shut down Rodgers in a 30-22 win over the Packers last week at Lambeau Field.

"That's our 'D,'" tight end Delanie Walker said. "They're some dogs."

Stafford finished 19 for 32 with 230 yards, one touchdown and an interception, missing a chance to become the first player in NFL history to throw for 350 yards in five straight games. Drew Brees of the Saints also did so in four consecutive games last season.

Stafford threw for 355 yards in last week's 27-23 win over St. Louis at home but also had three interceptions before halftime for the first time ? and said he couldn't do that again for the Lions to win. He never got in sync.

"We didn't do a job enough job in anything," Schwartz said. "Whether it was the run game, the pass game, defense, special teams. We need to play better in all phases. We left a lot of opportunities on the field."

The 49ers dominated on both sides of the ball 11 months to the day after rallying for a 25-19 win at Ford Field to hand Detroit its first defeat following a 5-0 start. It ended with excitable Harbaugh's firm handshake and backslap that ignited Schwartz ? and they had to be separated leaving the field.

There were some hot tempers Sunday, too. After Davis and Walker drove Cliff Avril to the sideline while blocking on a running play, Avril kicked Walker in the helmet and poked Davis in the eye ? though Walker didn't feel like it was intentional. Lions right tackle Gosder Cherilus and 49ers cornerback Tarell Brown pushed and shoved after a big hit by Patrick Willis on Johnson in the first quarter.

Smith exploited Detroit's depleted, frustrated secondary at every opportunity. On his TD, Davis easily beat Wendling, starting as regular safety Louis Delmas recovers from knee surgery.

Smith hit Michael Crabtree on the left sideline for a 17-yard gain, then Davis scored on the next play. The Lions were without rookie cornerback Bill Bentley because of a concussion sustained last week and cornerback Chris Houston with an ankle injury.

David Akers kicked field goals from 36 and 48 yards for San Francisco a week after connecting from 63 yards to tie an NFL record.

Jason Hanson finished with field goals of 38, 41, 40 and 48 yards. He also missed one off the right upright on a 40-yard attempt late in the second quarter. The Lions scored their lone touchdown on Stafford's 9-yard TD pass to Brandon Pettigrew with 1:29 remaining.

"I don't think as an offense we've hit our stride yet," Stafford said. "We moved the ball really well at times today against a really good defense, and we didn't take advantage of our opportunities in the red zone like we need to."

The 49ers ended their streak of 26 quarters spanning six straight regular-season games without a turnover, and 36 consecutive quarters without a lost fumble since Davis lost one Nov. 6 last year at Washington. San Francisco was trying to match the 2010 Patriots for the NFL record of seven games without a turnover.

After Hanson's first field goal, Kendall Hunter fumbled the kickoff return after being stripped by Tahir Whitehead and Kassim Osgood recovered. It marked the first career lost fumble in 18 games for the second-year halfback.

But Ahmad Brooks batted down a pass on third down in the ensuing series as the Lions had to settle for another field goal.

San Francisco's defense delivered again on Detroit's next series. On third-and-6 from the 20, Stafford threw down the middle of the field with nobody even close and safety Dashon Goldson jumped in for an interception.

"We know what our defense is going to give us," Gore said. "We need to match them."

No. 20 Notre Dame beats No. 10 Michigan State 20-3

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) ? Everett Golson threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score in the first half to help No. 20 Notre Dame beat No. 10 Michigan State 20-3 Saturday night.

The Fighting Irish (3-0) snapped a six-game losing streak against ranked teams and beat a top-10 opponent for the first time in seven years.

The Spartans (2-1) had won 15 straight at home. The streak included a win over the Irish in 2010 on a fake field goal in overtime that preceded coach Mark Dantonio having a heart attack.

Notre Dame is off to its best start since 2002 when Tyrone Willingham won his first eight games as its coach. The Irish opened 0-2 last year and 1-3 the season before in Kelly's debut before bouncing back to finish with eight wins.

Coach Brian Kelly, though, is not ready to celebrate just yet with No. 17 Michigan (2-1) up next at home.

"There are a lot of things to work on," he said.

Michigan State had its worst showing on offense at home since losing 20-3 to Central Michigan in 1991.

Golson was 14 of 32 for 178 yards and a TD, a 36-yard pass to John Goodman. He ran for a 6-yard TD early in the second quarter to give Notre Dame a 14-0 lead.

"He made some big plays for us early which put us in a good position," Kelly said.

Andrew Maxwell was 23 of 45 for 187 yards and Le'Veon Bell had 77 yards rushing on 19 carries for the Spartans.

The Irish shook off a sloppy start that included George Atkinson running into a teammate on a kickoff return, a false start and a timeout before their first snap.

Golson missed an opportunity to connect with wide-open receiver Chris Brown on what would've been a TD, but the first-year starter made up for it with his arm and legs. On Notre Dame's second drive, Golson eluded a rush as he rolled to the right and threw back across the field on a 36-yard TD pass to Goodman for a 7-0 lead.

Maxwell threw a pass on the ensuing possession into the end zone that Bennie Fowler dropped in what proved to be the Spartans best shot to score more than a field goal.

Maxwell didn't have as much time to pass as he did in wins over Boise State and Central Michigan, and Bell couldn't run all over the Irish as he did in the opener against the Broncos. Maxwell was sacked three times in the second quarter alone ? after not getting sacked in his first two games ? and one of those hits behind the line forced a punt that gave Notre Dame good field position. Golson took advantage, scoring on a 6-yard run on a play that was designed to be a pass to cap a 51-yard drive and give the Irish a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Michigan State responded with a 13-play drive that ended with Dan Conroy making a 50-yard field goal to match his career high and make it 14-3 late in the first half.

The third quarter included four punts for each team in the third quarter in a defense-controlled game that included eight punts for both teams.

The Spartans had a shot to force Notre Dame to punt early in the fourth, but Cierre Wood went left and cut back to the right on a 26-yard gain that seemed to deflate a team and crowd that didn't have much to cheer about all night.

Fans started to fill the aisles when Wood converted a fourth-and-1 from the Michigan State 37 with an 8-yard run to the outside. Kyle Brindza made a 29-yard field goal at the end of a time-consuming drive that took 6:21 off the clock and gave the Irish a 17-3 lead.

Michigan State's slim comeback hopes were dashed when Bell was going out of bounds and his lateral was caught by linebacker Manti Te'o with 4:20 left in the game to set up Brindza's 47-yard field goal that made it 20-3. Te'o had a game-high 12 tackles, one for a loss, and broke up two passes, playing just a few days after the deaths of his girlfriend, who had a long battle with leukemia, and his grandmother.

Notre Dame won its second straight in the series by more than a TD after nine of the previous 11 were closely contested contests.

Michigan State's defense gave up two TDs in the first half after not allowing one in the first two games. The unit improved as the game went on, but couldn't overcome offensive teammates that failed to move the ball consistently against Notre Dame's stingy defense.

The Spartans made their early appearance in the AP top 10 since 1979, but their lackluster showing will lead to them slipping in the rankings.

Notre Dame knocked off a top-10 team for the first time since Charlie Weis won his second game over Michigan in 2005.
