Asian shares rise on sustained policy hopes

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares gained on Tuesday as investors maintained the hope that Europe will take further action to tackle its debt crisis and the United States and China will adopt stimulus measures to support recovery.

European stocks were likely to open mixed after closing at their highest level in more than four months on Monday while U.S. stock futures signalled a solid Wall Street start after hitting a three-month high on Monday.

Financial spreadbetters called the main indexes in London, Paris and Frankfurt to open between a 0.1 percent drop and a 0.1 percent rise.

"Europe's turmoil is starting to subside somewhat and that is helping," said Lonsec senior client adviser Michael Heffernan.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan added 0.3 percent to a three-month high, led by a 0.5 percent gain in Australian shares and the index's materials sector. Japan's Nikkei stock average rose 0.7 percent.

The Reserve Bank of Australia kept interest rates steady at 3.5 percent as expected after cutting rates in May and June, helping to boost the Australian dollar to a 4-1/2 month high of $1.0603. Aussie last traded at $1.0582.

"Overall they sound reasonably comfortable and easing in the near term is probably off the agenda," said Michael Turner, strategist at RBC Capital Markets.

Sentiment improved as yields in Spain and Italy inched lower on Monday on expectations the European Central Bank will follow through with last week's statement which hinted at upcoming policy steps to contain Madrid's borrowing costs.

"The bid to risk is likely to be sustained in coming weeks on the back of attractive valuations and market anticipation of policy action out of Europe, China and even the U.S.," Morgan Stanley said in a research note.

Asian credit markets firmed, with the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index narrowing by 3 basis points.

The euro steadied at $1.2390, having hit a one-month high of $1.2444 on Monday.

Oil eased, with Brent down 0.2 percent at $109.39 a barrel and U.S. crude off 0.3 percent at $91.90. Gold steadied at $1,611.46 an ounce.

CHINA

Investors will now be turning to data from China due on Thursday, including industrial production, retail sales and inflation, for signs of whether the world's second-largest economy can pick up momentum in the second half of the year from a lacklustre first half.

"I am not encouraging people to be in resources. It is nice to see some gains but if you look at the medium-term outlook for commodities, it is not all that flash," Heffernan said, citing a slower growth profile for China, Australia's biggest market.

Others note that as risk appetite improves, currencies of economies perceived to be performing relatively better could come under pressure to strengthen which in turn could risk stifle growth momentum.

"Australia is a typical example of this ... It means that they will be more reluctant than they used to, to see their currency shoot through the roof," said Sebastian Galy, strategist at Societe General.

The RBA said in its statement on Tuesday that the Australian dollar remains high despite a drop in the terms of trade.

"It is not a surprise but the fact they are raising it is interesting," said Stephen Walters, Chief economist at JPMorgan.

Possibly reflecting a gradual increase in confidence for Europe to deal with its debt crisis, Morgan Stanley's filing showed on Monday its net exposure to five troubled euro zone nations - Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain - spiked 73 percent in the second quarter.

Morgan Stanley reduced hedges against the risk that those exposures might turn into losses. At the same time it significantly cut its exposure to France, flipping to a net short position against French sovereign bonds.

This comes after Europe agreed to a broad framework to shore up the region's troubled banks in late June.

Buying a Home for Retirement | Maryland Mortgage Lending

Buying a home for retirement typically comes with a lot of mixed feelings. Many families choose to downsize after the kids leave the home and they?re ready to retire, when they won?t need all the extra space and would prefer a smaller home that?s easier to maintain. But when you?re buying for retirement, there are also some questions you?ll need to ask yourself that might bring up some uncomfortable thoughts. Be prepared for this when you?re shopping for a retirement home, and find the right home in the right place to see you through the next phase of your life.

Consider the Layout of the Home

When you?re buying a home for retirement, you have to consider not only your needs now, but your anticipated needs for the future. Most of the time, the home you buy for retirement is the home you?ll live in for the rest of your life. Even if you?re feeling spry and lively at retirement, you might not want to climb stairs or deal with other challenges as you age. Consider the layout of the home and think about how you?ll want to live in the coming years.

Consider the Region and Neighborhood

Many people live in a certain area because that?s where their job is. If you?re buying a retirement home, you don?t have to buy near your job ? you?ll be retired! Think about where you want to spend the next phase of your life. You may still want to stay where you?ve lived for the past 10 or 20 years, and where you have friends and family. But many people choose to live where there?s warmer weather or easier access to amenities they want to enjoy during retirement. Think about the region and the neighborhood where you?re shopping for retirement homes, and ask yourself if it?s where you want to live.

Hero surgeon dies in Lake Michigan rescue

A surgeon plunged into Lake Michigan's waters roiled by rip tides and rough waves to save two young boys, but died despite his wife's frantic efforts to revive him with mouth to mouth resuscitation, police and his wife said today.

Dr. Donald Liu, chief of pediatric surgery at the University of Chicago Medicine's Comer Children's Hospital, saw the two boys, who were friends of the family, swept up in the water. Despite protests from his own children, who were scared about the dangerous conditions, Liu went in to save them.

"You couldn't stop him," Liu's wife, Dr. Dana Suskind, told ABCNews.com today. "He always did the right thing."

The two boys made it back to the shore near Cherry Beach in Chikaming, but Liu, 50, did not survive the 6-foot swells and treacherous currents.

"After he saved those boys and I couldn't see him, they finally found him and they pulled him from the water. I tried to do mouth-to-mouth, but I knew. And it was so painful," Suskind said between sobs.

The Coast Guard was responding to a call in a nearby area when they received the call to rescue Liu and were unable to get to him in time.

Conditions were ripe for a dangerous rip tide, said Erik Leuenberger, chief of response for the Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan. The wind Sunday was 18 knots, which Leuenberger said was about 21 mph.

"When we see a pretty strong wind come from the northwest, it's going to create a strong rip current condition in the southeast part of the lake," Leuenberger said.

Three people drowned on Lake Michigan Sunday, Leuenberger said.

"Everything [Liu] did, everything he talked about was always for the children," said Jeffrey Matthews, chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Chicago Medicine. "And so the tragedy is that he died, of course, as a hero doing what he did every day, which was saving children."

Suskind, crying at times, gave the emotional interview the day after her husband drowned because she wanted her three children to read about how great their father was.

"He wore scrubs all the time. He would've gotten married in his scrubs if he could. He was so understated, but really such a huge stature," Suskind said.

Despite long days in the office, Liu would always come home ready to play with his children Genevieve, 13, Asher, 10, and Amelie, 7. He especially loved throwing the baseball around, a pastime that meant a lot to Asher.

"I'm really sad that my dad died because every time he would come home from work at 5 o'clock, even though he didn't have to, he would play baseball with me and we would go in the backyard," Asher said. "We would always watch the White Sox together."

Asher said he hoped to continue the legacy of watching White Sox games with his family, in honor of his dad.

Liu was a passionate man and when he knew something was right, he didn't hesitate. Suskind said Liu told her he loved her on their second date and they were engaged three months later.

"It was actually meant to be," Suskind said.

They were married for more than 17 years, having met during their residencies at the University of Pennsylvania in 1992. Both Liu and Suskind worked at the University of Chicago Medicine since 2001.

"He was known as a selfless individual who was completely devoted to children," Matthews said.

"People will tell you that he's the heart and soul of our pediatric programs," Matthews said. "And always going the extra mile. He was tireless. You know, the kind of guy would operate all day and all night and say, 'Where do we have to go next?' And he would do whatever the children needed."

Chikaming Township's Assistant Police Chief Todd Taylor said, "It was a unique circumstance because this was a brave guy going out to try to help some kids."

Bob Arum hints at the possibility of a Pacquiao-Cotto rematch ? Boxing

Bob Arum hints at the possibility of a Pacquiao-Cotto rematch ? Boxing News

Hall of Famer promoter Bob Arum has hinted towards the possibility of former WBO welterweight titlist Manny Pacquiao taking on Miguel Cotto for the second time this fall.

Arum, who is scheduled for a meeting with the Filipino pride to decide his next opponent, believes it is about time for Pacquiao to decide whom he wants to face on November 10. Arum believes Pacquiao has a plethora of options in front of him, lined up to be sorted out.

Among all, Arum believes a fourth match against Juan Manuel Marquez or a second showdown against Miguel Cotto would be most profitable for him and Pacquiao. This is the first time Arum has come up with the notion of a rematch between Cotto and Pacquiao, considering the Filipino?s rejection towards facing Juan Manuel Marquez for a fourth time.

?We could do a Cotto rematch, assuming we can come to an understanding on the weight,? said Arum in an interview to ESPN.com.

?Cotto is talking about going to 160 to fight somebody, but we've been talking to Gaby and we'll sort it out. I think Manny would be willing to do it at 150,? he added.

Manny Pacquiao is currently busy helping flood victims in his city, ignoring his commitments to the sport for quite some time now. Arum believes it is time for Pacquiao to finally come up with a name.

?Time flies and we're going to have to the announcement and the media tour the week of Labor Day because the week after that is our other big fight. So we have a very small window,? Arum added.

For now, Arum is hopeful that Pacquiao would go for either Cotto or Marquez, and not Bradley. According to Arum, a rematch against Cotto or Marquez would be a bigger seller compared to a second showdown against Bradley.

It should be noted here that Pacquiao has promised his nation to bring the WBO welterweight title back home. In this very context, it becomes mandatory for the Filipino to fight Bradley sooner or later. On the other hand, Arum wants the Pac-man to go for another opponent this fall, and then fight Bradley next year.

Line Limited Liability Organizations ? The Most Recent in Firm ...

There?s a new star in town in the world of business legal entities and the new celebrity is called the collection LLC. Started eight years ago in the good pro-capitalistic state of Delaware, these new innovative darlings of the world of business are just starting to burst within the economic departments of several major companies across the country. Their pull? More limited liability protection of valuable company assets and greater strategic planning opportunities. The collection LLC is basically an LLC that?s allowed to have subsidiaries. It is an umbrella organizational framework that allows liabilities of a to be siphoned off in to part LLCs, of their parent LLC umbrella and assets, and far from the litigious vagrants that inhabit the business environment in the United States Of America. Think about a person collection as a division or part of the parent LLC, with gains, losses, assets and liabilities of each sub-LLC, legally separate and besides each other LLC within exactly the same related LLC family. Every individual LLC may sue and be sued, enter into agreements and hold title to an unique assets, including real-estate and personal property. Each series is treated as an unique separate legal entity, with separate owners and managers. The reason series LLCs have gained popularity lately is thanks to an Private Letter Ruling (PLR 200803004), which explained that series LLCs may use exactly the same ?check-the-box? tax category as other businesses. The door was opened by this PLR to permit collection LLCs to select an alternative tax category for each split up LLC, within exactly the same LLC umbrella framework. Today business organizations can custom tailor each split up subsidiary LLC to generally meet the business planning requirements of the corporation, offering heightened planning methods for hedge funds, capital raising funds, oil and gas companies and property organizations. As Borat would say, ?very nice.?While line LLCs are gaining acceptance, there are still many caveats. For just one, there is very little case law surrounding collection LLCs. With only eight states, at this writing, enabling the formation of string LLCs, this is new legal entity terrain. How will line LLCs be respected outside their state or source? Can the debts of person LLCs be respected? Do series LLCs actually provide protection from creditors of other family member LLCs (can creditors pierce someone to attach assets of another? Will there be a really guard between the grasp LLC (parent) and its subsidiary?Nonetheless, we?ve been down this path before when LLCs first became prominent in the late 80?s, early 90?s, following the fall of Leventhal, Horvath, among the biggest CPA firms in the state. LLCs gained acceptance and have exploded onto the appropriate business development landscape. Undoubtedly, series LLC may continue to develop regardless of the limitations of case law.
