The Mars Curiosity Rover scheduled to touch down on Aug. 5 represents mankind's 40th attempt to explore the Red Planet over the past 50 years. What is it about the Mars that keeps calling us back?
By Mike Wall,?Space.com / July 27, 2012

The 1-ton?Curiosity rover?? which will search for evidence that Mars is, or ever was, capable of supporting microbial life ? represents humanity's 40th effort to explore the Red Planet over the last half-century.
The huge number of attempted Mars missions may seem surprising, especially since many of our?solar system's other planets and moons remain relatively unstudied. But the Red Planet keeps calling us back ? and for good reason, experts say.
"Mars?is such a compelling scientific target," said Scott Hubbard of Stanford University, the former "Mars Czar" who restructured NASA's Red Planet program after it suffered several high-profile failures in the late 1990s.
"You can get to it every 26 months, and it's the place in the solar system most likely to have had life emerge," Hubbard told SPACE.com. "If you add that to Mars being also the most logical ultimate target for human exploration, I think that Mars will continue to be part of the space exploration portfolio." [7 Biggest Mysteries of Mars]
The?Mars exploration?era began in October 1960, when the Soviet Union launched two probes four days apart. The spacecraft, known in the West as Marsnik 1 and Marsnik 2, were designed to perform flybys of the Red Planet, but neither even reached Earth orbit.
The United States got in the game in 1964, launching the Mariner 3 spacecraft on an intended Mars flyby. The mission failed, but Mariner 4 succeeded, cruising past the Red Planet in July 1965 and sending 21 photos back to Earth.
The nation built on that accomplishment, sending a series of orbiters, landers and rovers to Mars over the following five decades.
Notable NASA successes include the Viking 1 and Viking 2 missions, which sent orbiters and landers toward the Red Planet in 1975; the?Spirit and Opportunity rovers, which landed in January 2004; the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which arrived at the Red Planet in 2006; and the Phoenix lander, which discovered subsurface water ice in 2008.
But failure remains a regular part of Mars exploration. NASA setbacks include the Mars Polar Lander and Mars Climate Orbiter, two missions that were lost upon arrival at the Red Planet in late 1999. And none of the 19 Mars efforts the Soviet Union/Russia has launched over the years achieved its goals in full.
Overall, the success rate for Mars missions is south of 50 percent.

The two players in cyber security are the cyber security experts who also can be white hat hackers and the bad hackers who are also known as the black hat hackers.
Weak passwords become unacceptable by many online businesses because they want to provide extra protection and reduce their liability in the event those passwords got hacked and their customer's identities were stolen. Stronger passwords are longer with extra characters that are very hard to remember and very easy to forget.
Users most often choose to save their long and strong passwords on their computers or flash drives so they don't forget them. As a result of that those passwords can be stolen if flash drives are lost and found by others, also computers can be hacked and stored passwords can be stolen. The other option users have is try to memorize their long passwords and if they forget them, they will have to go through the process of password resetting which can be time consuming. More often users are always required to change their passwords regularly to avoid being hacked and they will have to memorize the new passwords all over again.
Cyber security experts have been exploring different and effective methods to shield against hackers. Some passwords for critical systems and for those organizations with sufficient funding are gradually being replaced with biometric identifiers like fingerprints and iris scans.
Biometric information is unique to each person and they cannot be stolen by a phishing attack for example. Using fingerprint or eye scan to log in can be very convenient, easy and productive and secure . Will biometric become the foolproof solution to the cyber security delima and will it get rid of those numerious and complicated passwords? Some suggest that biometric will be the security trend for the future, secure access will be less dependent on lengthy passwords but it will not be foolproof system.
When biometric data is entered into a computer, the system doesn?t store the actual fingerprint or iris scan. It records a digital template of the biometric information. When a user log in, his or her characteristics are matched against those templates, and the match is given a similarity score. If it?s high enough, the user allowed access.
The result of several researches done to find cracks in the biometric security systems were successful. Researchers we able to mimic the digital templates of the finger prints and even build gummy finger versions of the prints to gain access.
Researchers also were able to hack into the Iris scans systems that takes images of the eye and create the iriscode. By making an image of the stored iriscode then modify it, researchers used the modified codes against the system and they were able to gain access successfully.
Security is on the mind of any online business big or small. Startups in particular are vulnerable to attacks because they have low security budget and they have little experience dealing with virus and malware attacks on their web applications. a website that is infected with a virus can be blocked by search engines, that can cause a big setback for any startup.
Startups should scan their machines and website files using commercially provided virus scan software. Furthermore it is important to regularly back up website files. Check with the hosting company to make sure they are using a secure environment. Changing the password regularly still the only good option to protect against hackers.

The Romney and Obama campaigns both say their guy is the better friend of Israel, which may explain the White House signing of a security cooperation act just before Romney visits.

Governor Romney will sit down with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders on Sunday, as part of his efforts to juxtapose his own high regard for Israel with what he says has been Mr. Obama?s ?shabby treatment? of America?s closest Middle East ally.
Romney?s objective: to cut into the whopping 78 percent of the Jewish vote that Mr. Obama won in 2008, while firming up his own luke-warm support among some evangelical Christians who have questioned his passion for Israel.
But by highlighting his administration?s commitment to Israel?s security only hours before Romney arrives in Jerusalem, Obama is signaling that he plans to cede no ground when it comes to Israel and the debate over how his administration has treated it.
What the battle suggests is that, among foreign policy issues, Israel is an emotion-laden topic that both campaigns believe they can turn to their advantage ? and that means this week?s tit-for-tat over Israel is likely to be only the beginning.
Both Obama and Romney speak of America?s unshakable friendship with Israel: Obama claiming that no president has done more for Israel?s security than he has, Romney insisting the president has downgraded the two nations? close links, in particular by not visiting Israel once during his three-plus years in office.
But the one-upmanship over Israel has heated up recently among campaign surrogates ? in part because Romney, who on Wednesday commenced a seven-day international trip, committed to silencing his criticisms of the president while overseas.
After Vice President Joe Biden said this week that Obama ?has done more for Israel?s security than any president since Harry Truman,? former US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton called Mr. Biden?s statement ?ridiculous? ? and offered his own superlative.
?This is the most hostile president since the state of Israel was created,? Ambassador Bolton said on Fox News.
The sparring over Israel ? and the administration?s record on it ? spilled over into a foreign policy ?discussion? the Brookings Institution held in Washington on Wednesday with representatives of the two campaigns.
Rich Williamson, a senior Romney foreign policy and defense adviser who served in the George W. Bush administration, skirted the evidence of Obama?s security commitment to Israel by zeroing in on what he called a lack of close ties, saying ?political cooperation has not existed.?

Looking to improve?public speaking Australia?ability? There is a stack of information about how to do so. And everyone you speak to, in Australia or overseas, will, of course, have their own ideas about the subject.
So, briefly (exceedingly briefly), here are four things to do which will ensure that when you?re?up there doing your public speaking Australia thing, you?ll be better at it than you feel you might be.
Here goes:
1. The size of the audience matters. Most people think that, if it?s a large one, e.g. four to 600 people, then that?s less scarier than a small one ? say 50 to 60. But there?s another couple of numbers to worry about, and they are 15 to 20. You see, when you talk to a large audience, you can just lecture them ? you just pushing your words out to them ? blah! Blah! Blah!. Below around 15 to 20 people, however, you must change your delivery. It is unwise in the extreme to simply lecture, say, 15 people. What?s the difference? Interaction! You Must ask questions and get them talking ? or you?re gone.
2. Get off to a good start. Work out and rehearse your opening ? even if you rehearse nothing else. From adult learning we know that if you?ve been successful in arousing their interest and getting them on-side with you at the beginning then, if you have a stumble of some kind, say, half-way through, your audience will most likely overlook it. But ? big BUT ? if you blow your opening and then stumble the way back is muddy, filled with trip-over rocks and likely to leave you in a permanent state of flop-sweat. Not good!
3. When I?m running public speaking courses Australia?one of the most common questions is, ?What Do I do with my hands?? Good question! Brief answer; don?t worry about them ? just concentrate on getting comfortable in front of the group and ? when that happens ?magically your hands will look after themselves. A word of advice: if you are worrying about them, then err on the side of movement rather than locking them away.
4. Eye contact ? I?m on the case here just about every time I write something about public speaking. Eye contact is the number one body language skill you have to master. I don?t care if you?re as cool and as sophisticated as James Bond in the rest of your bodily operation, if you don?t have eye contact, you don?t have an audience. And if you need help in that regard then, perhaps, some public speaking training would not go astray.
As I wrote above, there?s a lot more to cover to be successful at public speaking, but those four points will make a difference ? and you will feel more confident knowing that what you are doing is right.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The International AIDS Conference opened Sunday with a call for governments not to let tight budgets roll back progress against the epidemic at a critical turning point.
The conference's goal is to turn the tide on HIV. Experts say science has provided tools to finally stem the spread of this intractable virus.
San Francisco AIDS specialist Dr. Diane Havlir said it would be "an extraordinary failure of global will and conscience" if financial cutbacks block this chance.
She said the world has a chance to "start to end AIDS."
International AIDS Society President Dr. Elly Katabira urged the more than 20,000 scientists, policy-makers and people living with HIV at the meeting to "resolve together to never go backwards."
THIS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
From dark days to a critical turning point in the AIDS epidemic: The landscape has changed dramatically in the two decades since the world's largest AIDS conference last met in the United States.
Back in 1990, the first good medicines were still a few years away. Before they arrived, caring for patients with HIV was like "putting Band-Aids on hemorrhages," said the leading U.S. AIDS researcher, Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Fast forward: Today's anti-AIDS drugs work so well they not only give people with HIV a near-normal life expectancy, they offer a double whammy ? making those patients less likely to infect other people.
Sunday, the International AIDS Conference opened in the nation's capital with the goal of "turning the tide" on HIV. Even without a vaccine or a cure, the goal is to finally stem spread of the virus, using that so-called "treatment as prevention" and some other powerful protections.
"There is no excuse, scientifically, to say we cannot do it," Fauci, infectious disease chief at the National Institutes of Health, told reporters Sunday.
But the challenge that more than 20,000 scientists, doctors, people living with HIV and policy-makers will grapple with this week is how to get to what the Obama administration calls an AIDS-free generation. Where's the money? What works best in different countries and cultures?
And with HIV increasingly an epidemic of the poor and the marginalized, will countries find the will to invest in the most vulnerable?
"Rich countries think, 'Who cares? We have the treatment, I hear now that HIV is a chronic condition,'" a worried French Nobel laureate Francoise Barre-Sinoussi, co-discoverer of HIV, told The Associated Press. "I really think there is not the same political commitment as it was in the past."
That political commitment must expand to fight laws that are driving some of the populations most at risk ? gay and bisexual men, sex workers and injecting drug users ? away from programs that could help protect them from getting or spreading HIV, said Michel Sidibe, director of UNAIDS, the United Nations AIDS program.
"It's outrageous that in 2012, when we have everything to beat this epidemic, that we still have to fight prejudice, stigma, exclusion," he said.
People living with HIV marched through downtown Washington Sunday to urge the public and policy-makers to pay attention to a disease that, in this country, doesn't get much publicity anymore.
"We're everyday people. Anybody and everybody can catch this," said Ann Dixon, who traveled from Arkansas to attend the march. She learned she had HIV in 1997.
The AIDS conference ? remarkable for giving a forum not just to leading scientists but to everyday people who live with HIV ? hasn't returned to the U.S. since 1990, in protest of the longtime ban on people with the virus entering the country. The Obama administration lifted the travel ban in 2010, finishing a process begun under the Bush administration. Not lifted was a ban on sex workers and injecting drug users, and protesters briefly interrupted the opening news conference to decry their absence from the meeting.
The conference comes at a time when scientists increasingly say they have powerful new tools to add to tried-and-true condoms.
Studies show treatment-as-prevention, treating HIV right away rather than after someone is sick, lowers patients' chances of spreading the virus through sex by a stunning 96 percent. Already, Fauci said regions that are pushing to get more people tested and rushed into treatment are starting to see infections drop, from San Francisco and Washington to part of South Africa.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration just approved use of a daily AIDS medicine, Truvada, for use by healthy people hoping to lower the risk of infection by a sexual partner. Hard-hit poor countries are grappling with how to get that protection to their highest-risk populations.
Other goals include getting more HIV-infected pregnant women treated to protect their babies, and getting more men circumcised in developing countries to protect them from heterosexual infection.
But the hurdles are huge.
Since the first reports of AIDS surfaced 31 years ago, a staggering 30 million people have died from the virus and 34.2 million now are living with HIV around the world.
There's still no cure and no vaccine. For every person who starts treatment, two more are becoming infected.
In poor countries, a record 8 million people are getting HIV drugs, but the United Nations says it will take up to $24 billion a year ? $7 billion more than is being spent now ? to reach those most in need.
The epidemic is worst in developing countries, especially in Africa. Progress has stalled even in the U.S., which has seen about 50,000 new infections every year for a decade. Here, nearly 1.2 million people live with HIV, and one in five don't know it.

Car insurance is not designed solely to protect your vehicle. It is a means of protecting both you and other drivers. Read over your policy when you get it to ensure that it covers what you think it should. These suggestions are going to help you gain a lot more from your insurance policy.
Remember that when you buy auto insurance, you are only covering the people that are on the policy. If you allow someone to drive your car, and they were to get into a car accident, the insurance may refuse to pay. There is an additional coverage you can purchase as part of your policy that will let you loan your car to others if you choose. This option will cost you more though.
Going with a larger deductible is one simple way to cut your car insurance costs. If your insurance deductibles are high, your rates may be lower as insurance companies believe that you will not file claims on smaller amounts. Yet you should be conscious of that having a higher deductible means you have to pay more if you do file a claim.
When considering the purchase of aftermarket additions for your car, be sure to check how much your insurance company will cover if your car is stolen or damaged. Often, the company will only cover the value added to the entire car, not the actual cost of the additions.
The consumer complaint ratio should be available for most of the car insurers in your state. What this number indicates to you is the percentage of provider claims that result in a complaint.
You should have a basic knowledge of insurance coverage plans when you are shopping for car insurance. There are many different situations that come into play when determining the cost of insurance. Bodily injury liability covers legal costs, death and injury claims if you were to hit someone.
Tailor the amount of your vehicle coverage to the actual value of your car. Old vehicles that aren?t worth much require less coverage, than more expensive models. The rate at which cars are stolen is also something that is a factor. Even if your vehicle is older, but is a vehicle that is stolen commonly, think about comprehensive coverage.
If you can, avoid paying your insurance bill in monthly installments. Car insurance companies can tack on anywhere from $3-$5 on average a monthly bill. This can quickly build up. This can be troublesome with your other bills. Less payments means more money.
You can get some very good discounts on your auto insurance policy premium, if you are involved with some well-known professional organizations. If you are a member of an organization, such as AARP or even a member of a credit union, you may qualify for discounts on your auto policy.
Consider the cost of insurance premiums as you contemplate purchasing a new car. Keep in mind that cars with better safety features get lower premiums. Sportier cars are frowned upon and will cost you more. Remember to include this expense when buying a new car.
Insurance is the ultimate protection against any type of accident or disaster happening to your car. Individuals pay a pre-set deductible, but the insurance should cover some costs.
Insurance companies do not all operate in the same way. If you are dissatisfied with your auto insurance quote, check the prices of competitors. Most likely, you will be able to find a cheaper option.
Learn as much as you can about insurance before you begin looking for policies. You should also know what your state?s minimum insurance requirements are. Prepare yourself by searching for quotes online and studying some basic facts about different types of policies. This will greatly benefit you when it?s time to discuss a policy with an agent.
Sit down with your car insurance agent to prove that you are correctly covered before personalizing your car. You may spend about a grand on some new rims for your car, but if an appraiser values them much lower the difference between the amounts will be lost if the car is stolen.
Reduce your premiums by going for the highest deductible you can afford. Even though you will be held responsible for repairs in some cases, a high deductible covers you in other ways. A high deductible makes sense in cases where the car is not worth very much.
You will have to pay a greater sum than a driver with a clean record, but some companies are different. Many companies will even help you to re-calculate your premium, in order to figure out what you can do to get the best rate possible.
Now that you have learned a bit more about auto insurance, use the skills you have learned to examine your existing policy. Now that you have more knowledge about auto insurance, you may notice that your policy is not what you thought it was. Remember that you can make any changes that you need to so that you and every other car is protected.

Giving children and adolescents with egg allergy small but increasing daily doses of egg white powder holds the possibility of developing into a way to enable some of them to eat egg-containing foods without having allergic reactions, according to a study supported by the National Institutes of Health. The study results will appear online in the July 19th issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
"Children with egg allergy are at risk for severe reactions if they are accidentally exposed to egg-containing foods," said Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., director of the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). "Currently, the only way to prevent these reactions from occurring is for these children to avoid foods that contain eggs. While this relatively small study provides encouraging new information, it is important for the public to understand that this experimental therapy can safely be done only by properly trained physicians."
The study is one of several federally funded trials of oral immunotherapy (OIT), an approach in which a person with food allergy consumes gradually increasing amounts of the allergenic food as a way to treat the allergy. Because OIT carries significant risk for allergic reactions, these studies are all conducted under the guidance of trained clinicians. Symptoms of allergic reactions can range from mild (hives, redness and itchiness of the skin) to severe (swelling of the back of the throat, trouble breathing, drop in blood pressure, and faintness or dizziness).
The trial was conducted by the NIAID-supported Consortium of Food Allergy Research (CoFAR) at clinical sites in Baltimore; Chapel Hill, N.C.; Denver; Little Rock, Ark.; and New York City.
The goals of the study were to determine if daily egg OIT reduced or eliminated participants' allergic responses to egg protein and if it did, whether or not the benefit persisted after therapy was stopped for four to six weeks.
The CoFAR study enrolled 55 children and adolescents aged 5 to 18 years who had egg allergy, one of the most common food allergies seen in children. Participants were randomly assigned either to the treatment group, which received egg OIT (40 participants), or to the control group, which did not (15 participants). Both groups were followed for 24 months.
Participants received a daily dose of egg white powder or cornstarch powder (placebo) at home. Researchers gradually increased the dose of egg or placebo powder every two weeks until the children in the egg OIT group were eating the equivalent of about one-third of an egg every day.
Participants came to the clinic to have three oral food challenges, at 10 months, 22 months and 24 months, with the maximum challenge equivalent to one egg. They passed the challenge if they had either no symptoms or only transient symptoms not directly observable by a doctor, such as throat discomfort. Participants failed the challenge if they had a symptom that could be observed by a doctor, such as wheezing.
After 10 months, none of the participants who received placebo passed the challenge, but 55 percent of those on egg OIT did. After 22 months of egg OIT, researchers gave a second oral food challenge to all of the children in the treatment group. At this food challenge, 75 percent of those on egg OIT passed.
"At the beginning of the study, most of the participants were highly allergic to egg, but after months of daily egg OIT, we found that many of them could eat more than a whole egg without having a reaction," said A. Wesley Burks, M.D., chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, one of the study's lead authors.
"Reducing these kids' allergic response to egg also lessened parental anxiety over how their children might react if accidently exposed to egg at school or at someone else's house," added Stacie Jones, M.D., professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock, another lead author on the study.
To determine if egg OIT had any long-term benefit on treating the children's food allergy, the participants who passed the 22-month test were completely removed from egg OIT for four to six weeks and then rechallenged at 24 months. Eleven of the original 40 children (about 27 percent) passed this third food challenge. None of the children from the placebo group were retested because they had failed the prior food challenges. The 11 children who passed the third test were allowed to eat egg or egg-containing foods in their normal diets as frequently or infrequently as they chose. At a one-year follow-up, they reported no symptoms.
According to the study authors, these results indicate two types of benefits. First, the majority of the study children could be safely exposed to egg while on egg OIT. Second, a small group of children?approximately one-fourth?were able to eat egg in their regular diets even after stopping OIT for four to six weeks.
"Although these results indicate that OIT may help resolve certain food allergies, this type of therapy is still in its early experimental stages and more research is needed," said Daniel Rotrosen, M.D., director of the NIAID Division of Allergy, Immunology and Transplantation, which oversees CoFAR. "We want to emphasize that food OIT and oral food challenges should not be tried at home because of the risk of severe allergic reactions."

The situations in True?a torrid affair with the nanny while Elsa is away on business?sound trite and soap opera-ish, but Pulkkinen offers a new angle by letting Martti and Elsa?s granddaughter, Anna, imagine the affair. This isn?t a stretch for Anna: she and Martti have a long-standing habit of looking at strangers and inventing life stories for them. Anna combines imagination with her own life, projecting her own pain, left over from her relationship with a past boyfriend?s young daughter, onto Martti and Eeva?s story, thinking Eeva would also suffer from being separated from Eleonoora.
Interpretations of reality and relationships float through True. Martti, a prominent painter, tells stories, too, through his art, including portraits of the women in his life, and Elsa is a well-known psychologist. Pulkkinen also weaves in the social changes of the 1960s, referencing protests about the Vietnam War and sending Eeva to Paris. Eeva is no activist, though, and Pulkkinen contrasts the personal and the social. Here?s a paragraph from one of Anna?s chapters imagining Eeva?s voice:
No one will admit it but all of us are actually more interested in the lake and the sauna and the half of a blueberry pie on the table than we are in the fact that reality is being created at this very moment in offices and meeting rooms and on speakers? platforms and who knows maybe underground in the kinds of groups whose names have only just been thought up.Pulkkinen refers to other Finnish sweets, including some of my favorites: breads with cardamom, which my mother used to bake using my Finnish grandmother?s recipe, get several mentions as do candies from Fazer, which I used to buy in airports on my way to and from Moscow. I suspect they draw on Finnish readers? senses and?more importantly?memories even more than they draw on mine.
In Rogers?s translation, the narrative voices of True feel neutral and, considering the emotional subject matter, almost flat, as they describe landscapes, family relationships, and even Elsa?s death, which the reader knows must come. But Rogers?s tone felt true to me: it prevented the novel from becoming maudlin, and it fit nicely with True?s Finnish settings, where characters endure, with stoicism, hot saunas, cold swimming, and all sorts of emotional pain and distance.
I think it?s the combination of stylistics, Finnish motifs, and, of course, stereotypical elements of stories about family?meaning everything from the book?s narrative tone to the birds, the sweets, the lake, the rotting boards in the sauna, the love of ice cream, and even the closet holding Eeva?s old dress?that hold True together, making an old story feel worthy of retelling, with, of course, variations.
Disclaimers: I received a review copy of True at BookExpoAmerica from Other Press, thank you! I enjoyed speaking about Russian literature in translation with Other Press during BEA. More on disclosures: here.Up Next: Michael Frayn?s Skios, which I enjoyed very much.
