China docks spacecraft manually

China has successfully completed its first ever manual docking of a spacecraft with another space module.

Astronauts on the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft docked with the Tiangong-1 lab module without relying on an automated system.

State television broadcast images of Jing Haipeng, Liu Wang and China's first female astronaut, Liu Yang, smiling after completing the exercise.

The docking is seen as a key step in the building of a space station, which China hopes to finish by 2020.

A manual docking procedure would be used in the event of a failure with the automated system.

It is regarded as a difficult manoeuvre, bringing gently together two orbiting vessels travelling at thousands of miles an hour.

Liu Wang took charge of the operation, while Liu Yang conducted aerospace experiments.

"The success of the manual docking mission represents a major breakthrough. It was a precise and perfect docking," said Wu Ping, spokeswoman for China's manned space programme.

Manual docking was mastered by the USSR and US in the 1960s.

The Shenzhou-9 spacecraft was launched on 16 June.

It carried out a successful automatic docking when it reached the Tiangong-1 module on 18 June.

Every move of the mission has been watched with patriotic pride by China's state media, the BBC's John Sudworth in Shanghai reports.

Ross homers twice in Boston's 9-4 win over Braves

BOSTON (AP) ? Kevin Youkilis' farewell at Fenway Park on Sunday even was moving for Cody Ross, one of the newest members of the Red Sox.

The burely Youkilis was then urged to come out for a curtain call by his teammates, coaches and manager Bobby Valentine before heading down the steps. He was given a lengthy standing ovation and the fans chanted "Yook." The entire dugout looked empty, with everyone standing on the top step and applauding Youkilis.

Valentine thought it was a fitting sendoff.

"It ended the right way," he said. "It was the longest run to the dugout. ... I told the players what I was going to do and he did the rest."

Boston completed interleague play with a winning record for the eighth straight season (11-7).

Jason Heyward continued his torrid June for the Braves, hitting a solo homer among his three hits.

Atlanta, which lost for the ninth time in 13 games, closed interleague play 8-10. The Braves lost two of three to the Red Sox after taking two of three against the Yankees in New York.

"We were .500 against the American League East on the road," said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. "You always like to get a little greedy. We had an opportunity to win two out of three here and we just couldn't convert it."

Aaron Cook (1-1), making just his second start with the Red Sox and first since going on the disabled list May 6 after sustaining a cut on his left knee covering home plate, gave up three runs ? two earned ? six hits and didn't walk or strike out anyone in five innings.

Braves starter Mike Minor (3-6) gave up three homers and allowed seven runs ? four earned ? in 4 2-3 innings.

"Just really basically is what it boils down to is I couldn't throw a fastball for a strike on the inner half today," Minor said.

Adrian Gonzalez added a solo homer for Boston, which won six of seven series against NL opponents.

Heyward is hitting .391 this month with five homers and 12 RBIs.

Cook filled-in for Clay Buchholz, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with what Valentine called a "gastrointestinal issue."

The Red Sox jumped ahead with a four-run fourth against Minor. After breezing through the first three innings allowing just a pair of singles, Minor walked the first two batters in the inning. Ross then homered into the first row of seats above the Green Monster, making it 3-0. One pitch later, Gonzalez sliced a flyball into the Monster seats to make it 4-0.

The Braves capitalized on Cook's throwing error for a run during a three-run fifth. Eric Hinske had a two-run double into the center field triangle after Heyward and Andrelton Simmons singled. Juan Francisco then bounced back to the mound and Cook had Hinske off the bag, but threw widely past third to allow him to score to make it 4-3. Cook retired the next three batters, finishing his work.

In the fifth, Boston scored three unearned runs off Minor when Will Middlebrooks had a sacrifice fly and Ross followed with a two-run homer completely out of Fenway Park over the Monster, making it 7-3. Simmons had a throwing error on Kelly Shoppach's grounder to open the inning when he fired the ball into the Red Sox dugout.

Heyward homered off Matt Albers in the sixth.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Activists say Syrian troops have intensified their shelling of rebel-held neighborhoods in the central city of Homs as living conditions there deteriorate further.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees say the shelling killed at least one person on Sunday.

Activists say the city's besieged rebel-held areas have been under intense shelling and ground attacks for a week. The Observatory urged the U.N. to intervene and evacuate more than 1,000 Homs families, including women and children. It says their lives are in danger.

The latest shelling comes a day after U.N. observers suspended their patrols in Syria due to a recent spike in violence.

Activist say more than 14,000 people have been killed since the crisis in Syria began in March last year.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) ? Arizona's baseball team moved to a new ballpark this season, moving off campus to Hi Corbett Field, a former spring training site and home of the minor league Tucson Toros.

These new digs have suited the Wildcats just fine.

Shaking off years of postseason disappointment on the road, Arizona earned its first trip to the College World Series since 2004 by beating St. John's 7-4 on Saturday to complete a two-game super regionals sweep in front of a rowdy crowd at Hi Corbett Field.

"I told my wife, if we can get to the right regional, we can have a chance here with this group," said Arizona coach Andy Lopez, making his fifth trip the CWS. "And boy, we got the right regional: Tucson."

The Wildcats had been in the wrong ones the past few years.

A three-time national champion, Arizona (43-17) had trouble getting back to Omaha, in part because of its draw. The Wildcats lost to Miami in Coral Gables, Fla., in 2008, to TCU in Fort Worth in 2010 and to Texas A&M in College Station last season.

This season, Arizona (43-17) earned the right to play at home and made the most of it.

Coming off their first Pac-12 championship since 1993 ? they shared the title with UCLA ? the Wildcats raced through Missouri and Louisville in the regionals by a combined score of 47-10.

Arizona was again at Hi Corbett Field for the super regional and won the first game Friday by rallying from a five-run deficit. The Wildcats jumped on St. John's (40-23) early in Game 2 and never let up, riding the steady pitching of Konner Wade, superb defense and timing hitting to get back to Omaha for the 16th time.

Wade (9-3) allowed four runs in a six-hitter and didn't walk or hit a batter for the first time all season. Shortstop Alex Mejia had an RBI single and several superb plays in the field, Seth Mejias-Brean had three hits and Bobby Brown added two RBIs to set off raucous celebration.

"It's a big deal," Brown said. "To hear Coach Lopez talking about it day after day and now we can experience it ourselves, it's great."

St. John's suffered through a heartbreaking loss in the super regional opener to Arizona and fell behind early after a catcher's interference call led to three runs in the first inning against starter Sean Hagan (8-3). The Red Storm tried to fight their way back, but could never climb all the way out of that early hole to end their deepest postseason run since 1980.

"We couldn't keep them off us," St. John's coach Ed Blankmeyer said. "Everytime we were starting to chip away, they just kept us away."

Arizona had a dramatic win in the series opener, fighting back from the big deficit and down a run in the 10th inning to win 7-6 on Trent Gilbert's game-ending RBI single.

The Wildcats got out to the early lead this time, thanks to a mistake by Danny Bethea.

With two outs in the first inning, the St. John's catcher was called for interference when his glove got in the way of Robert Refsnyder's swing on a grounder up the middle. Instead of going off with the third out, St. John's had to stay out and watch Mejias-Brean, Brown and Joseph Maggi each hit run-scoring singles that put Arizona up 3-0 before the Red Storm came to bat for the first time.

Mejia added a run-scoring single in the second inning after Joey Rickard worked a walk for the second straight at-bat, giving Wade a nice early cushion.

Arizona's lanky right-hander was good early, needing just six pitches to get through the first inning. He got some help in the second, when Mejia made a sliding grab at shortstop to throw out Frank Schwindel, and Maggi dived to smother a ball down the line at first to rob Sean O'Hare.

Wade retired the first nine batters until Kyle Richardson's leadoff single in the fourth inning, but Mejia erased him with another spectacular stop, diving up the middle and flipping the ball to second baseman Gilbert to start a double play.

St. John's got an unearned run off Wade in the fifth inning, when Bethea lined a run-scoring single to left after Gilbert was charged with a throwing error on O'Hare's grounder. Another error by Gilbert, this one on a squirrely grounder by Richardson, and a passed ball by Riley Moore set up an RBI groundout by Matt Wessinger in the sixth that cut Arizona's lead to 4-2.

That would be as close as the Red Storm would get to forcing a third game.

Mejias-Brean chased Hagan with a leadoff double in the seventh inning and scored on Brown's run-scoring double off James Lomangino. Brown followed with a run-scoring single that made it 6-2.

Hagan allowed five runs ? four earned ? on six hits in six innings, with seven walks.

"I probably should have put them down before that," Hagan said of the three runs after the catcher's interference call. "It was just one of those days when the balls were bouncing like that and the plays were bouncing like that."

St. John's Zach Lauricella followed Jeremy Baltz's leadoff double with a run-scoring single in the seventh inning off Wade, but Johnny Field had a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning that pushed Arizona's lead to 7-3.

Wade induced a double play that gave up a run and then finished off his fourth complete game of the season by getting O'Hare on a nubber to second, sending the Wildcats into each other's arms and on to Omaha.

"It's a great accomplishment," Mejias-Brean said. "Being to regionals the three years I've been here and to get to super regionals and then go to Omaha is going to be fun for us to actually experience it."

Assad: Syria faces 'real war waged from the outside'

Syrian President Bashar Assad has said that his country is engaged in a "real war" with outside forces and denied any role in the Houla massacre, which he said was carried by ?monsters?.

In his first public address since January, he warned he would not be lenient on those he blamed for violence in the country, and promised that a 15-month-old crisis would end soon if Syrians pulled together.

In a speech to parliament, he repeated many of his earlier pledges to maintain a crackdown on opponents he describes as terrorists implementing a foreign conspiracy, while offering dialogue with those opposition figures who have avoided armed conflict or outside backing.

He made his comments a day after international envoy Kofi Annan said the spectre of all-out civil war was growing daily in Syria and the world needed to see actions, not words, from Assad.

Jim Muir, the BBC correspondent in Beirut, said: ?Anybody hoping that President Assad's first public speech since January might open up some lines of advance towards a solution will have been disappointed.?

In his hour-long address, Assad offered no specific response to Annan's plea for bold steps to end the conflict.

Thousands of people have been killed in a crackdown on protests against Assad, which erupted in March last year and have become increasingly militarised, destabilising neighbouring Lebanon and raising fears of regional turmoil.

"This crisis is not an internal crisis. It is an outside war carried out by inside elements," Assad said, looking relaxed as he spoke to parliamentarians. "If we work together, I confirm that the end to this situation is near."

'True monstrosities'
Last month's massacre in Houla of 108 people, mostly women and children, triggered global outrage and warnings that Syria's relentless bloodshed - undimmed by Annan's April 12 ceasefire deal - could engulf the Middle East.

Sunni Muslim powers, particularly wealthy Gulf Arab states, have strongly supported the uprising against Assad, an Alawite closely allied with Shi'ite Iran and Hezbollah.

Western powers have accused Syrian armed forces and pro-Assad militia of responsibility for the May 25 Houla killing, a charge Damascus has denied.

Despite the discovery of another atrocity following the recent massacre in Huola, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad showed no sign of relinquishing his power. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

"What happened in Houla...and what we described as ugly and abominable massacres, or true monstrosities - even monsters do not perpetrate what we have seen," Assad said.

He said his country was facing a war waged from outside and that terrorism was escalating despite political steps including last month's election for parliament, whose new members Assad was addressing.

"We are not facing a political problem because if we were this party would put forth a political programme. What we are facing is (an attempt) to sow sectarian strife and the tool of this is terrorism," Assad said.

"The issue is terrorism. We are facing a real war waged from the outside," Assad said.

Annan, the joint United Nations and Arab League envoy for Syria, told an Arab League meeting in Qatar on Saturday that Assad must make "bold and visible" steps immediately to change his military stance and honour his commitment to cease all violence.

Annan criticised Assad for failing to comply with a peace plan to end the conflict and said his forces were carrying out atrocities, arbitrary arrests and other abuses.

The United Nations says Syrian forces have killed more than 9,000 people in a crackdown on protests against Assad. Syria blames the violence on foreign-backed Islamist militants it says have killed more than 2,600 soldiers and security force members.
